Mission
Statement
ProFemina was founded during the Yugoslav war, to express
pacifist ideology and tolerance; to fight nationalism, especially
Serbian nationalism; and to rebuild communications among women
from the former Yugoslavia and in the Balkans. Its mission is
to familiarize women in the region with current Western feminist
thought and trends in women's studies, and to promote local
competence in arts and literature, as well as in academic disciplines.
History and Activities
ProFemina has been publishing quarterly since 1994.
It is the only journal in today's Serbia and Monenegro to
publish essays and studies on women and visual arts, architecture,
music, dance, along with original literary contributions mainly
by younger anti-nationalist authors, and studies from women's
history, theory, and criticism. A translation of the Women's
WORLD book, The Power of the Word II: Women's Voices and
the New European Order, will be Issue #27, to be followed
by an "ex-YU" issue, now in preparation, and a special
Albanian-Serbian issue. In 1996, it also founded the ProFemina
Literary Award in memory of Biljana Jovanovic, an exceptional
writer and peace activist, who died at the age of forty-three
in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The prize-winning book is published
by ProFemina. Winners so far have been Marija Ivanic,
Mirjana Stefanovic, and Ljubica Arsic. For information on
subscriptions and to purchase individual issues, contact Svetlana
